Sindh Education Minister Weighs in on Schools Reopening in January 2021


Sindh’s Minister for Education, Saeed Ghani, said that is unlikely that the schools in the province will be reopened in January 2021 as it had been decided earlier.

The minister stated this during a press conference in Karachi on Wednesday, and explained, “Keeping in view the ongoing second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, it is unlikely that education institutes will be reopened in January 2021”.


He also announced that students will not be promoted without examinations this year.

Ghani’s statement reflects the worsening COVID-19 situation in the province. So far, the provincial tally has surged to 206,489 cases with 1,005 new reports during the last twenty-four hours.

Sindh also recorded 26 virus-related deaths on Tuesday which pushed the total fatalities to 3,379. The province has recorded 444 deaths in December only, making it the deadliest month of the year since the viral outbreak in February.

The highest coronavirus prevalence rate was observed in Karachi and Hyderabad with positivity rates over 15 percent on multiple occasions.

Educational institutes across Pakistan were shut down last month due to the second outbreak of the pandemic in the country. The federal government had announced that schools will be reopened on 11 January 2021, subject to improvement in the overall COVID-19 situation.

According to the education policy announced by the Federal Minister for Education, Shafqat Mahmood, students will have home-based/online classes until 24 December after which the winter vacations will commence.

All the examinations except for admission and recruitment tests that had been scheduled for December have been postponed indefinitely.
